Climbing

Gecko
Rock is situated approximately 25 km SSE of Touwsrivier
in a highly scenic mountainous region to the east of Nougaspoort.
In the area between Nougaspoort and the Touws River the
linear mountain ranges broadly referred to as the Koegaberge,
reach heights of nearly 1300 meters.
In scenic, climatic, and botanical terms it is perhaps
best regarded as transitional between the Great and Little
Karoo – a position that contributes significantly
to its natural history interest.
Gecko Rock boasts an abundance
of stunning flora and fauna
Three contrasting
vegetation types are represented on the central portion
of Gecko Rock; Mountain Renosterveld,
the predominant vegetation type, which covers the valley
floors and the gentler mountain slopes, Mountain
Fynbos, which occurs along the higher sandstone
mountain ridges, and Little Succulent Karoo,
occurring within the upper, rockier portions of exposed,
north-facing slopes as well as on north-facing sandstone
ridges and krantzes with thin soils.
The varied, and for the most part well-conserved, natural
vegetation on Gecko Rock constitutes one of the main attractions
of this Eco destination.
